McDonald’s new Happy Meal box turns into VR goggles
Surprisingly enough, that’s where McDonalds comes in. The headset is essentially the same as Google Cardboard, which basically amounts to a cardboard headset with a smart phone mounted to the end.
Fast food juggernaut McDonald’s is rolling out a pilot program in Sweden that turns Happy Meal boxes into virtual reality goggles.
The kit is (unsurprisingly) called “Happy Goggles”, and they’re only being peddled in Sweden – for now, anyway. According to the details, McDonald’s are launching their “Happy Goggles” promotion which is due to start on March 5th and will run for one week (ending March 12th).
The Happy Goggles meal box will only be available at some restaurants in Sweden; it isn’t clear whether the company plans to roll out the novelty elsewhere, though it will no doubt be watching how well the goggles go over with consumers.
Only 3,500 convertible Happy Meal boxes will be available starting this weekend for one week. Rather than creating a separate product that’s ready to go, the Happy Goggles can actually be constructed out of a Happy Meal box once a customer has finished eating the contents (and perhaps finding a video game toy). The game was made with the support of the Swedish alpine ski team.
Priced at about $4, it’s part of a recent trend toward low-cost VR options like the aforementioned Google Cardboard or Mattel’s recently rebranded Viewmaster. Following some relatively simple instructions, the packaging will be able to be taken apart and put back together to form a virtual reality headset, much in the style of Google’s Cardboard.
