Bugatti to debut its Chiron at the Geneva Motor Show
The Bugatti Chiron has just taken the title of the world’s most powerful production auto, with an 8.0-litre quad-turbo W-16 that turns out 1,480 horsepower and uses it to reach a top speed electronically limited to 420 km/h (261 mph), the automaker said February 29, ahead of the car’s reveal in Geneva. Really, really fast. But one thing we don’t know is exactly how fast it will go without the speed limiter.
Bugatti unveiled a new high-performance supercar at the Geneva Motor Show on Monday.
“The Chiron is the result of our efforts to make the best even better”, Bugatti president Wolfgang Dürheimer said on the company’s website Monday.
However, no Bugatti Chiron supercars are destined for Australia as the model is planned for left-hand-drive only, as with its predecessor. Other versions of the Chiron are also in the pipeline, Bugatti says, with replacements for the convertible Veyron Grand Sport and faster Veyron SuperSport both expected.
We look forward to bringing you a first drive of the Chiron later in 2016.
The Chiron will be capable of zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.4 seconds and a top speed of 260 miles per hour, or more: The engine is limited to that speed, Bugatti says, to make it safe for road use.
Volkswagen seemed to blow people away with the Veyron in 2005, but they may have outdone themselves this time around with the Bugatti Chiron.
Bearing, as the Veyron, the name of the driver of the glorious period of the Alsatian brand, the new Chiron has no other choice than to push the envelope a still further, to 1500 horses in the ‘occurrence.
Remember the Bugatti Veyron not having a navigation system? The “Lift” mode increases the ground clearance and is only available until the vehicle hit 50 km/h (31 mph), while the “Autobahn” mode is automatically engaged at speeds over 180 km/h (112 mph).
Bugatti is only planning to produce 500 Chiron, a third of which have already been spoken for. The car’s spoiler is part of all this self-adjustment fun, with various levels of extension for top speed and Autohbahn / handling modes, as well as the ability to serve as an air brake or simply retract entirely. Bugatti has tested the limits of physics.
By the numbers the Chiron clearly achieves what was required – namely to improve quantifiably on every stat on the Veyron’s sheet in order to generate the necessary excitement. That’s enough to overcome the Chiron’s colossal mass – it weighs just 5kg shy of two tonnes – and gets you from 0-62mph in “less than” 2.5 seconds.
