Slain Ohio pastor’s brother arrested in fatal shooting
Police arrested an OH man after they say he attended church were his brother is the pastor and killed him after the service wrapped up.
Reports paint a chaotic scene on Sunday about 12:30 p.m.at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton.
Police say they expect 68-year-old Daniel Gregory Schooler will face a murder charge Monday.
The shooter is believed to be Schooler’s brother and police are investigating a possible motive.
The 70-year-old pastor’s brother was arrested at the church and taken to the Montgomery County jail.
In addition to serving as a local pastor, Schooler was also retired from the field of education, where he had worked for more than 30 years.
Daniel Schooler is being held at the Montgomery County Jail without bail, according to jail records.
Schooler had assaulted people in the past and had a tendency to be violent when he does not take his medication, a police report from 2008 said.
Among the nine victims of the Charleston, S.C., church shootings last June were the church’s pastor, the Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney, 41, and three other ministers: the Revs. He filed a lawsuit in 2011 against the Rev. Schooler and other family members, alleging that he asked for his inheritance from the Council of St. Peters Baptist Church.
A relative told the Dayton Daily News that Daniel Schooler has a history of mental illness. “I tried to stop [the] pastor’s wife from going back there, but she pushed me out of the way”, church member Beulah Booker-Robinson said.
