‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is getting mad love at the Oscars
Indeed, military movies have won Oscar gold in only three of the last six Academy Awards, says Laura Law-Millett, director of the annual Washington, D.C.-based GI Film Festival.
The film follows the true story of how reporters at the Boston Globe revealed the extent of child abuse by Catholic priests in MA. The absence of female writers, producers, directors, producers, and other behind-the-camera roles, is an ongoing problem in Hollywood, clearly highlighted by Mad Max’s Oscars success. Those are some qualities I definitely want in my Best Picture victor.
The ceremony was boycotted by some Hollywood figures protesting about the lack of ethnic diversity among this year’s nominees.
The awards ceremony was held at the Dolby Theatre here with glitz and glamour of the Hollywood film industry on Sunday.
Rock insured that the topic remained at the forefront throughout the evening, usually finding hearty laughs in the process.

“Climate change is real”.
“Let us not take our planet for granted”, he said. He capped off his speech with the line “Do not take this planet for granted, I do not take this night for granted” to a standing ovation. He’s the first person to pull off that feat since Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1949-50. (Smith incorrectly said he was the first openly gay Oscar victor, but the sentiment was genuine).
Inarritu said it was a “great opportunity to our generation to liberate ourselves from all prejudice”, saying the colour of someone’s skin should be “as irrelevant as the length of their hair”.
The film also earned an Oscar for its director, Mexican Alejandro Iñárritu, as well as the prize for Best Cinematography. And despite the sheer number of nominations and awards, some Mad Max fans are surely disappointed that the majority of them were for backstage roles – still well-deserved and hard-won recognition of very important filmmaking work, to be sure.
Among the seven editors, all seven were forecasting “Mad Max”: Chris Beachum, Marcus James Dixon, Rob Licuria, Daniel Montgomery, Matt Noble, Tom O’Neil and Paul Sheehan.

But the wins at times felt secondary to the sharp, unflinching host.
The best segment of the night was a reimagining of the year’s top films with black actors in them.
South African-born Margaret Sixel’s parents, who live in Cape Town, were today celebrating their daughter’s first Oscar win. He instead lost to the famed stage actor who co-starred in Steven Spielberg’s “Bridge of Spies“.
