Watch Scott Kelly Relinquish Command of the International Space Station
Scott Kelly’s twin brother, former NASA astronaut Mark Kelly, participated in parallel twin studies on Earth to help scientists compare the effects on the body and mind in space. Kelly and Kornienko will be accompanied by Russian cosmonaut Sergey Volkov who spent less time in orbit – 182 days.
“They send it back to Mission Control”, NASA spokesman Jay Bolden of Johnson Space Center told Space.com in 2012 during the last presidential election cycle.
Scott Kelly’s space mission stands out as this is the first “twin study” in space exploration.
While in space, Kelly documented numerous same things we do every day: He made coffee, ate burgers and tacos, watched football and baseball, got a flu shot, and took selfies with the earth over his shoulder.
On a daily basis over the course of the mission NASA researchers tracked data relating to Kelly’s caloric intake, temperature, exposure to radiation and bone density-the loss of which is a major concern in microgravity.
If nothing else, the collection is the best way for you to get acquainted with why Kelly is so popular, so read on, space cadets.
United States astronaut Scott Kelly waves as his space suit is tested at the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome, prior to blasting off to the International Space Station (ISS), late on March 27, 2015.
Astronaut Tim Kopra has now taken command in space.
Kelly posted a picture of earth from the space station on twitter, saying he’d be returning Tuesday. He said, “It’s kind of like I’ve been in the woods camping for a year”. So many become farsighted, in fact, that the space station keeps a supply of eyeglasses.
He is expected to return to earth, landing in Kashakstan, on Wednesday morning after spending 340 straight days in space.
“I could go another hundred days, I could go another year if I had to”.
The commander is the highest authority on the ISS, responsible for directing the activities of crew members, providing regular updates to the flight director, maintaining the peace, and preventing a space mutiny. Both are records for US astronauts, but not for Russian Federation. While that’s not quite a year, it’s still a record for an American astronaut, and one of the longest-lasting spaceflights ever. NASA will spend years analyzing the tests he conducted on board.
