Jewish Activist Protects KKK Members From Angry Mob at Hate Protest
A brawl erupted in Anaheim, California, on Saturday during a rally for white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan when counter-protesters attacked members of the hate group, driving them from the area.
Members of the Ku Klux Klan who were arrested following a brutal beatdown in Anaheim were released because they were acting in self-defense, police said citing evidence, the Associated Press reports. The group marched from Pearson Park to City Hall, and although the gathering got loud at times, police Sgt. Daron Wyatt said it remained peaceful.
The man is wanted on suspicion of assault with force likely to cause great bodily injury in connection with several stabbings Saturday afternoon at Pearson Park, where counter-protesters confronted a small group of KKK members who showed up for a rally.
Three counterprotesters were stabbed: one with the decorative end of a flagstaff, one with a knife and one with an object the police did not describe, Wyatt said.
The counter-protesters “smashed the side window of the Klan SUV and the front windshield”, said Levin, who heads the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University in San Bernardino. Levin spoke with Gary and Shannon on KFI Los Angles about the incident. Some of the protesters could be seen kicking a man whose shirt read “Grand Dragon”.
A KKK leader said that he tried to enlist security from the Anaheim Police Department before a rally that turned violent on Saturday, but that the police declined.
Orange County prosecutors will ultimately decide whether or not to file charges.
‘It’s their way of saying, “We have no reason to believe there will be any trouble beyond the trouble you get at a rock concert,”‘ he said, adding police are obligated to ensure public safety.
Levin was also critical of the lack of a police presence. Authorities say a Klan member stabbed three people in self-defense, one critically.
La Pointe says the strong reaction against the Klan has a lot to do with racial tensions in Anaheim, and points out that the Anaheim city council recently voted down a measure to protect people of color against police brutality in Orange County.
A second stabbed counter-protester was in stable condition when taken to a hospital and a third, who was found in a vehicle at the intersection of Lemon and Sycamore streets, was also hospitalized in stable condition, Wyatt said. “Additional units continued arriving over the next few minutes, ” Wyatt said.
Donner and four more of his co-Klansmen were arrested at the rally for assault with a deadly weapon.
Hugo Contreras, 38, of Hawthorne, who was booked on suspicion of elder abuse, with bail set at $50,000.
Given the nature of the KKK and its members – you would think that a group infamous throughout history for promoting white pride, terrorizing minorities, and other marginalized groups would undoubtedly be the ignition for the fight.
