It hasn’t been a banner year for billionaires, however.
United States presidential hopeful Donald Trump is busy eating into and perhaps talking his way out of – his $4.5 billion fortune at number 324, but maybe Jaoquin “El Chapo” Guzman is not as rich as Mexican and U.S. authorities claim – the recently-collared drug cartel kingpin failing to burrow his way onto the list.
A volatile stock market, cratering oil prices and the strong dollar have reshuffled the ranks of billionaires, the magazine said.
This redistribution is sensitive to the top of the list.
Russian Federation has 77 billionaires, Hong Kong 69, and Brazil 23, down from 31 past year.
The Spaniard Amacio Ortega, founder of the clothing brand Zara, comes in second place (67 billion against 64.5 last year), the American businessman Warren Buffett keeps his third place (60.8 billion, down 11.9 billion).
The net worth of Christy Walton, widow of one of Walmart founder Sam Walton’s sons, fell from an estimated $36.5 billion a year ago to $5.2 billion in 2016 based on what Forbes said was new details of how her fortune is split with her son, Lukas.
The biggest loser was Helu. He was the biggest gainer with his fortune going up by $11.2 billion for a total net worth of $44.6 billion.
The youngest billionaire was 19-year-old Danish heiress Alexandra Andresen. At 20, his sister Katharina is the second youngest of the list (both in 1476th place).
The French Bernard Arnault (LVMH) is 14th, with a fortune estimated by Forbes at $ 34 billion.
There were 221 people who dropped from the billionaire ranks in 2015.
Rounding out the new top ten are Larry Ellison, executive chairman of software giant Oracle ($43.6 billion); Michael Bloomberg, a former New York City mayor who heads the business information firm that bears his name ($40 billion); and brothers Charles and David Koch ($39.6 billion), who lead USA multinational corporation Koch Industries.
USA fashion designer Tory Burch also missed the 2016 list, as the value of luxury fashion brands fell, Forbes said.
Among those appearing in the rankings in 2015 and 2016, 892 were less rich, 501 are more.
Despite the global slump, Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg still made more money than anyone else, while China saw more of its citizens become billionaires than any other country.
