How Bernie Sanders can still win the nomination
Clinton’s victory was so striking that, according to exit polls of voters, she won even among those who most valued a candidate’s honesty and caring – two groups that had sided strongly with Sanders in votes earlier this month. Both campaigns will use this as an opportunity to claim victory, win delegates, and in their minds, move closer to potentially securing the Democratic nomination.
The resounding victory makes it clear that Sanders, despite his best efforts, has been unable to address his fundamental weakness with black voters.
Sanders supporter Mary Stacey said she was still dumbfounded by the numbers in SC, even though she says she’s “cautiously optimistic” about Sanders’ chances on Super Tuesday. Clinton, who is running for president, has sent and received these emails from her private server located insider her home.
Last October, Sanders’ strategist suggested that the candidate only needed to win 30 per cent of the black vote in the state to win the state.
Sen. Sanders should have a good shot to compete in this New England state. If she wins a majority of the delegate Tuesday, it will become ever more hard for Bernie Sanders to catch her.
At his Rochester rally that Saturday night, Sanders seemed much less energetic than he did in Texas.
Still, he did invest heavily in SC, with 200 paid staff on the ground and an aggressive television advertising campaign. Getting voters to the polls is the big challenge for Sanders and the eventual nominee. Sanders has 87 delegates and few immediate opportunities outside of Vermont to gain ground on Clinton.
“She’s been first lady, a senator, secretary of state”, said Marna Lee, 74, a retired medical records consultant from Lawrenceville, Georgia, which is among the states voting Tuesday.
SC marks the second straight contest won by Clinton, and her third win in the first four states to vote.
“America has never stopped being great, our task is to make America whole”, Clinton said at the Greater Imani Cathedral of Faith outside Memphis, where she was welcomed with roaring applause and a choir’s song.
If these demographics carry forward to similar states around the south Bernie Sanders is going to fall behind quickly.
Clinton was declared the victor by nearly all major US TV networks at the end of the voting. Among black voters, Clinton leads Sanders 66.5 percent to 11.9 percent.
During a raucous victory rally, Clinton briefly reveled in her sweeping support from SC voters, hugging backers and posing with them for selfie photos.
“When you talk about making a political revolution, what it means is we’re going to change the political culture”, he said.
This win was an important one for the former Secretary of State. Among women, Clinton beats Sanders 58.2 percent to 20.3 percent.
After supporting Barack Obama in 2008, black voters, who will be the dominant force in the coming Southern primaries, turned out in droves for Hillary here.
“In politics, on a given night, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose”, Sanders told reporters. Trump outshines Rubio by 10 percentage points among voters who cite terrorism as the most important issue and by 54 percentage points among those who say immigration is most important.
