Clinton wins Georgia, Virginia; Sanders wins Vermont
Sanders could only bank on winning his home state of Vermont and both campaigns were vying for support in Colorado, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Virginia.
In Vermont, Bernie Sanders was supported by overwhelming majorities of both men and women, and huge majorities of voters across all age groups.
Donald Trump has jumped to a big lead in the Super Tuesday delegates with victories in Georgia, Alabama, Massachusetts and Tennessee.
Clinton also picked up wins in Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas while Trump carried the GOP contests in Alabama and MA.
“Any candidate who can not win his home state has real problems…I believe we will do well in Texas”, Cruz predicted.
Sen. Marco Rubio looked strong in Minnesota, where he was leading at the time Cruz gave his speech.
After a string of wins in the Super Tuesday primaries, Trump, at a press conference in Florida, claimed that he is on his way to win the party’s presidential nominee as he is way ahead of the other candidates. The state has many low-income, white voters, many of whom Sanders has won over in early primary states.
Fox News projected Sanders winning his home state of Vermont and Oklahoma.
Twelve states hold nominating contests Tuesday, with 595 delegates at stake.
Trump has anxious many in the Republican establishment with proposals such as building a wall along the United States southern border with Mexico, deporting 11 million illegal immigrants and slapping a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country.
According to the AP’s count, Clinton now has at least 723 delegates, including super delegates – the party leaders and members of Congress who can support any candidate.
Notching victories in states that went for Barack Obama eight years ago, Democratic contender Hillary Clinton appears to have won primaries in Georgia and Virginia – which are two of the largest prizes on Super Tuesday.
“When I see something that runs counter to who we are as a party and a country I will speak up”.
The first polls in Georgia, Vermont and Virginia close at 7 p.m. ET. Sen. In Texas, about 3 in 10 Democratic primary voters were Hispanic and a little less than 2 in 10 were black. About a quarter of Virginia’s Democratic voters were black, and also overwhelmingly backed Clinton, according to exit polling. “Once we get all this finished, I’m going after one person – Hillary Clinton”.
Signaling her confidence, Clinton set her sights on Trump as she addressed supporters during a victory rally in Miami.
