Nebraska’s Democrats preparing for presidential caucus
That’s because the national GOP now requires a binding delegate vote – meaning Colorado would have no voice if the prevailing candidate drops out of the race before the national Republican convention in Cleveland in July. And that may be hard this year.
“It shows his advantage, in particular, in caucus states”, said Seth Masket, chairman of the University of Denver’s department of political science.
Minnesota stands alone on the Super Tuesday map.
That’s when absentee preference cards were due at the state party headquarters for people who can’t participate in Saturday’s live caucus events.
And don’t look for much national news media attention Tuesday, because it’s “Super Tuesday”, with primaries and caucuses in 12 other states besides Colorado, with more delegates at stake.
Jeriel Brammeier, a Clinton supporter, said her candidate has been working for Democratic values for most of her life, pushing for some of the same issues that are still hot topics today, such as universal health care and equal pay for women and minorities.
The nonbinding caucuses will give momentum to the Democratic victor in this battleground state come November.
On the biggest night so far of the Democratic nomination contest, Clinton won seven state primaries, mostly in the South where Sanders has struggled to attract African-American voters.
Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Turnout could top the 2008 DFL record of 220,000 voters.
Colorado isn’t the only state with such a plan for its delegates.
That’s because Colorado Republicans are not taking straw poll votes for president.
Clinton has maintained a national lead ahead of Sanders since the start of the campaign. “We’ve had a lot of advertising, so people are aware of it. Both campaigns are here and they want to win”. Unlike the Democratic caucus in Colorado, which will pick a nominee, the Republican caucuses in Colorado and Wyoming will not.
“What brought me out tonight was to try to get some sense of where the Republican party is going as a whole”, said 56-year-old June Fuller of Englewood, who opposes Trump and supports Ohio Gov. John Kasich. On the Democratic side, the broader result will be an indicator of whether Senator Bernie Sanders can make an improbable comeback. “I’ll say one thing, he’s sure getting people to caucuses”.
A Republican delegate elected to the national convention can commit to support a candidate on their intent to run form, or can remain unbound.
There are a certain number of delegates for each district and they’re supposed to vote as representatives of their precincts. To qualify for ballot access a candidate must first win the majority of eight states worth of delegates which will not be easy this year.
In many of his stops, Sanders delivers a standard speech with little talk about local issues important to people in the crowd.
