Buccaneers trade up to take kicker Roberto Aguayo
Did the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just trade up in the draft to leap frog the New England Patriots in order to select a kicker? That all sounds great, but sounds even better when you look at what the Tampa Bay Buccaneeer kickers did last season. I don’t think anybody else in the country has a kicker like him.
The Buccaneers really wanted Roberto Aguayo. It was certainly an unexpected and interesting pick late in the second round.
“Everybody’s going to have their own opinion of that”, said Koetter. “That’s a unique situation… the best kicker in college football history doesn’t come around very often”.
“Robert is unbelievable”, Winston said at the time. It’s no different, really, than picking [quarterback] Jameis [Winston] first previous year.
Over his career, Aguayo did not miss a single extra point and missed just nine field goals over his three seasons in Tallahassee.
The NFL Draft is all about “value” as most pundits like to say.
Sports Illustrated rated the Buccaneers’ selection of Aguayo an “F”. He made 69-of-78 field goals at Florida State, a cool 88.5 percentage.
Aguayo also became the first kicker since Sebastian Janikowski to forgo his senior year in college.
The offense should have more opportunities to be in scoring positions in 2016.
“Taking Roberto – the importance of special teams is paramount”, Licht said, via Pewter Report. I like the way that he’s wired. I like the body of work that he’s put out there, obviously. Indeed, there are a myriad of ways in which Aguayo could affect the Bucs’ game-day decision-making if he proves to be as good as he was at Florida State. “Florida State past year did a lot of mortar kicks where they tried to pin teams inside the 20 and he was excellent at that”. “I think he is our best offensive weapon”. “He’s [kicking] 57, 58, 60 yards like he’s kicking a PAT”.
Connor Barth was 23-28 for 82.1 percent conversion rate with three of those misses coming for 40-49 yards. Aguayo is an accurate threat to score once the offense gets near the opposition’s 35 yard line.
