Watch Greg Owen strip down to save a bird at TPC Sawgrass
Course: TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course, 7,215 yards, par 72), Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. In the age of the $10 million FedEx Cup champion, that may not sound like such a big stack of bills as it used to.
Let’s break down some of the favorites at this year’s event.
The Players Championship airs on Global TV Saturday, May 14 at 2 p.m. ET and Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. ET. After he cost himself the Masters on the 12th, he still was one under over his next six holes. McIlroy’s past Players issues aside, you are not a major if the players themselves don’t consider you a major. Coming off of his first missed cut in recent memory, the 2009 champion could be overlooked.
Watson is often quoted as saying that playing at Royal Dornoch “was the most fun I’ve ever had on a golf course”. TPC Sawgrass does not seem to favor any specific type of player.
Fowler had missed the cut in four of his six starts at The Players Championship before winning a year ago so we won’t look too hard at form figures for this week’s tournament.
The 17th, with its island green surrounded by water that claims an average of 45 golf balls every tournament, gets a lot of attention, but it really is a good all-round test of golf.
FEELING GREEN: Danny Willett has had a lot of time to spend with his wife and newborn son – and his green jacket – as he hasn’t played since winning the Masters almost a month ago. And it would be an absolute honor to be able to put my name there, and to be able to walk underneath from the locker room past the caddie hut there underneath in the basement there, to be able to see my picture up on the wall. After a unusual start on Thursday where the leaderboard was littered with random names, the best players in the field steadily gained ground all weekend as the course played tougher as the final three holes held scores in check. It’s a big event. At the Players in 2015 he shot 6-under on the back nine Sunday to force a three-way playoff in which he defeated Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner, clinching what certainly remains the biggest win of his career to date. So if the No. 2 player in the world sneaks in a practice round at another course instead of yours the week before your tournament, you’re definitely not a major. He’s made adjustments, however.
“It’s just for some reason the three-wood sometimes makes me uncomfortable”.
In 1991, Phil Blackmar had sole possession of the lead before hitting his tee shot into the water on the 17th hole in the final round en route to a double bogey, and Australia’s Steve Elkington won by one stroke over Fuzzy Zoeller.
Ranked 5th in Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Courses, Royal Dornoch in the far north east of Scotland is a veritable links classic. He also has finished in the top 25 in each of his two starts at TPC Sawgrass. But there is also the rest of the field to consider. Not at Sawgrass. Majors, on the other hand, are all about the spoils. At Augusta last month, he was not at his best and was still there or there abouts and just last week at The Wells Fargo Championship he finished tied 4th with a fantastic closing 66.
But will any of them actually finish atop the leaderboard? Could TPC Sawgrass become the site of his first win? Both of those walkthroughs give you a good idea of what to expect on each hole, and most of the holes will be familiar to most golf fans and fantasy golf players who have tried to navigate this event in past years.
