Tornado Leaves Damage and Injuries in Mayfield, Kentucky
The tornado produced heavy damage to homes and uprooted trees in Mayfield, but there were no life threatening injuries or fatalities.
Hail has been spotted in western Iowa, and a tornado has been reported near Lincoln, Neb., but Des Moines is expected to see just heavy rain, Allan Curtis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Johnston, told the Register on Monday night.
The NWS called the weather event a “particularly risky situation” and placed a tornado warning into effect until 3:30 p.m. CDT for Northeastern Graves County and Northwestern Calloway County.
Tornadoes were also reported in Iowa and Nebraska, but there were no immediate reports there of injuries or significant damage.
Business and home owners have begun cleaning up after the worst storm in three years to hit the quad state area of Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. Several homes were damaged and eight people were injured, according to a report from KFVS, an online partner of WSMV.
Graves County deputies were taking ATVs out to get to homes to check for injuries.
A photo tweeted by the National Weather Service in Oklahoma shows the advice on where to take shelter can be life saving.
The weather service received an unconfirmed report of a funnel cloud in Davis County, which is southeast of Des Moines, on the Missouri border, Curtis said.
The twister was among a number of violent storms that raked the Plains on Monday.
From there, the storm continued northeast through the county.
