Tottenham lose 5-1 to Newcastle, finish 3rd in EPL
Mauricio Pochettino named two substitutes at half time – taking off Son and Mason for Josh Onomah and Tom Carroll respectively – and for a spell it seemed as if things were improving.
However, the visitors were ravaged on the counter by a depleted Newcastle, Wijnaldum doubling his tally from the spot before Rolando Aarons and Daryl Janmaat put the game well beyond doubt and capped off an embarrassing day for Spurs late on.
Tottenham were trailing 2-0 at half-time to goals by Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic but reduced the deficit through Erik Lamela after the break.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s men picked up just one point from the last 12 available to them, gifting Leicester the title and opening the door for Arsenal fans to celebrate “St Totteringham’s Day” once again.
Mitrovic doubled the hosts’ advantage on the stroke of half-time, sending in a diving header from Sissoko’s centre that Hugo Lloris partially blocked, but was unable to prevent from finding the net. First Mousa Sissoko capped a run into Tottenham’s penalty area with a woeful (but effective) dive that earned Newcastle the penalty they would convert for their third goal.
Minutes later, Mitrović got sent off with a straight red card after a harsh foul on Walker. Harry Kane once again found it hard without his partner in crime, Alli.
Tottenham have been renown this season for being ruthless in front of goal, with the emphatic wins over Stoke and Bournemouth, but the squad could not produce enough chances for their proven striker to finish. Tottenham did not look interested and paid the price against a team more motivated to finish strongly.
“Tottenham took it right to the wire”.
Tottenham were on top and – not for the first time in this awful season – Newcastle appeared to have destructed under pressure. It is something they should achieve for the first time in over two decades here, and then the preparations will begin for a season where they make their long-awaited return to the Champions League, in which they acquitted themselves so well when they last competed in 2010-11.

While it was disappointment for Spurs after their defeat at Newcastle, third is still their highest finish in the Premier League.
