Will White House Aide Testify Over Iran Deal?
He said Rhodes, in the profile, showed “disdain” for the media and foreign policy circles.
We look forward to a President with more credibility, maybe even as soon as 2021.
Rhodes was initially called to testify at a Tuesday hearing on “White House Narratives on the Iran Nuclear Deal” by House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) after Rhodes gave a remarkably blunt interview to the New York Times Magazine on the Iran deal.
“It’s Republicans who are demonstrably wrong when it comes to the Iran deal”, he said, accusing some lawmakers of being “wildly misinformed, mistaken or lying” by exagerrating how much Iran would benefit financially from the deal.
Michael Rubin, a former Pentagon adviser who testified, told the Washington Free Beacon following the hearing that Congress has grounds to launch an investigation into whether these efforts may have violated USA laws against the establishment of domestic propaganda campaigns targeting Americans.
“We created an echo chamber”, Rhodes told the Times.
Since the article was published, Rhodes has contended that the White House’s case was based on facts.
The profile also details the shaping of the “story” on the Iran deal and a narrative that it was achieved after the 2013 Iranian election that saw the rise of Hassan Rouhani and a “moderate” faction inside the regime.
As far as the allegation that the JCPOA would lead to a nuclear-armed Iran – an allegation which Earnest said “has not turned out to be true” – informed critics did not suggest that would occur within mere months of the deal’s implementation last January. Leading Republicans have become so exercised over the deepening scandal, they’re calling on the president to fire Rhodes.
Sens. John Cornyn, Mark Kirk and John Barrasso have gone so far as to call for the president to dismiss Rhodes “before he further tarnishes the Office of the President”.
In his opening remarks, Chaffetz said he had hoped Rhodes would provide “clarity” on whether or not the White House deceived the public.
“Specifically, the appearance of a senior presidential adviser before Congress threatens the independence and autonomy of the President, as well as his ability to receive candid advice and counsel in the discharge of his constitutional duties”, Eggleston wrote.
That the White House didn’t think to go back to the table to renegotiate some of the more egregious sections of this deal shows how eager it was to grovel before the Iranians.
“Speaking at the Center for New American Security, Rhodes said he has no plans to leave his job because he’s motivated to pursue initiatives that “can make a positive difference in people’s lives”, such as bringing democracy to Burma”. “The people who know me know what I care about and know how I approach issues and know what motivates me in this job”.
