UCLA agrees to 15-year deal with Under Armour
UCLA’s 15-year deal is just the latest to surpass the quarter-billion mark.
Nike holds the three largest – a 15-year deal with Ohio State worth $252 million, a 15-year deal with the University of Texas worth $250 million and an 11-year deal worth about $169 million with the University of MI. Because Under Armour not only understands this, but embraces it, we are excited to embark upon this new journey together.
Though full terms have yet to be disclosed, sources say UCLA will receive $15 million United States dollars in cash up front and $11 million USD annually over the course of the deal.
Under Armour’s UCLA deal is significantly more than its deal with Auburn which is now the richest deal in the Southeastern Conference.
Under Armour was launched in 1996 by former University of Maryland football player Kevin Plank from his grandmother’s basement with an initial investment of $40,000. The Texas Longhorns also have a $250 million deal with Nike over 15 years. “It was important for us to plant our flag in L.A”. No school has won more NCAA championships than UCLA’s 113.
It is another example of Under Armour making an aggressive play to add a school to the fold, often at the expensive of Adidas.
Of course, as SB Nation reports, the big question in all of this is what the Bruins uniform will look like when the deal kicks in next summer.
Under Armour (UA +2.3%) is about to sign the largest sponsorship deal in college athletics history, according to ESPN’s Darren Rovell.
