Trump shifts to Clinton after claiming GOP delegate majority
But Trump still faces the daunting task of unifying skeptical Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who has voiced concerns about Trump’s tone and his lack of policy specifics.
At the same time, Clinton faced fresh questions about her use of a private email server while secretary of State, even as she fought to pivot toward Trump, who she warned would take the country “backward on every issue and value we care about”.
“This man, who is an unqualified loose cannon, is within reach of the most important job in the world”, she told MSNBC.
Clinton meanwhile is set to clinch her party’s nomination following California’s June 7 primaries, but she remains locked in a battle with challenger Bernie Sanders.
The Republican said he would “love to debate Bernie”, but would want the debate to raise at least $10 million for charity.
Trump’s good news was tempered by his own continuing campaign problems.
“Now that Donald Trump has racked up a sufficient number of delegates to clinch his party’s nominations, Republicans must just be flocking to support and defend him, right?”
It said the real estate tycoon’s delegate count rose when a small number of unbound Republican delegates, including Oklahoma party chairwoman Pam Pollard, said they would support him at the convention.
“I think he has touched a part of our electorate that doesn’t like where our country is”, Pollard said.
Some delegates who confirmed their decisions to back Mr Trump were tepid at best, saying they were supporting him out of obligation because he had won their state’s primary.
While Trump has the required amount of delegates, his nomination by a divided Republican Party is not yet secured.
The former reality TV star has dominated headlines since launching his presidential campaign a year ago with a mix of incendiary comments and policy stances seen as insulting Mexicans, Muslims and women among others. But securing the necessary delegates effectively ends Trump’s primary campaign, in which he outlasted 16 others seeking the nomination. But that truce appeared to be short-lived.
The billionaire businessman, who had received 1,235 delegates as of early Thursday, was put over the top of the GOP’s 1,237 threshold later that day as North Dakota unbound delegates state Rep. Ben Koppleman and John Trandem pledged their support to Trump, the Associated Press reported.
“Of course they’re rattled”, she said of foreign leaders.
“When I think of the campaign I held in 2005, touring the United Kingdom to become leader of the Conservative Party, it was pretty exhausting”.
Mr Trump’s pivotal moment comes amid a new sign of internal problems.
Rick Wiley, who ran Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s ill-fated presidential campaign, “was hired on a short-term basis as a consultant until the campaign was running full steam”, Trump’s campaign said Wednesday. We will make them as carefully and consistently as we can. A few things we won’t tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by dashes), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING.
