Moffat County veterans emphasize reverence on Memorial Day
“The first day you lost a brother you understood what Memorial Day was”, Johnson said of when the holiday truly gained meaning for him while he was serving in Baghdad in 2004.
There are many ways to pay your respects; in Will and Grundy counties this long weekend there will be parades, memorials, services, ceremonies and moments of silence at area veterans organizations, churches, cemeteries and town squares. The day’s events kicks off at 11 a.m. We’ll have coverage from that tonight at 6. After the short parade, attendees gathered at the Ellwood House for a ceremony featuring keynote speaker, AmVet’s Department of IL senior vice commander Richard Shea. There was a touching tribute to EHS graduates who sacrificed their lives in the service of our country with pictures, flags and a pair of combat boots sitting below each picture. “They’re my heroes”, said Hammond.

Veterans at the event thanked the public for their support over the years.
“Over the last couple of months I have noticed the morale go”.
“Service members come from all walks of life”, Kaczynski said, “Many didn’t ask to leave their homes but they were called for something bigger than themselves”.
“The willingness of America’s veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude”.
I’m proud to be the son of a veteran and I’m sure many in our great state are proud of all of our Florida-born soldiers and all of their sacrifices.
Viilo wears her pride close to her heart, though not a veteran herself. The cemetery is the permanent resting place for those who served from the Civil War to Vietnam. It keeps the focus on what Memorial Day is about.
“I have a lot of memories from Memorial Days, you know, and family”.
World War II veteran Paul Story, 93, certainly has one to tell.
“We took what we learned from our elders and our training into this moment”, he said.
