Cops Shoot Man After Entering Wrong Home
The shooting is under investigation, the GBI said Wednesday, but initial information now indicates that Henry County police had responded to the wrong place.
After Powell was shot, some Henry County police officers continued to try to find the home where the 911 caller said screams and gunshots were heard, Dutton said in an interview Friday.
“I think the police should identify themselves more if they show up at someone’s house in the middle of the night, instead of just shining lights in their windows”, said Darrell Cooper, who has known Powell for about 30 years. They say the 63-year-old ignored verbal commands to drop the weapon and that’s when they opened fire.
Relatives of William Powell told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper that he died around 4 p.m. local time at the Atlanta Medical Center.
Police did eventually find the correct house, according to the GBI.
“The officer directly involved has been placed on paid administrative leave per protocol”, HCPD Capt. Joey Smith stated.

Powell, who is an Air Force veteran, remains in critical condition.
His wife told the GBI that he had gone outside to see why his dogs were barking and had come back in to get his gun to go back outside when the confrontation occurred. “Went to school”, she said.
The Powell family said they are thankful for the wishes and prayers of neighbors, friends and the community.
