Von Miller’s contract talks with Broncos on hold for now
It is sturdy and unforgiving.
Von Miller and the Denver Broncos are in the middle of contentious contract negotiations, but despite claims to the contrary there is absolutely zero chance Miller will sit out the 2016 season. Suh’s deal contained a shade under $60 million in guaranteed money ($21.5 million more than what is being offered to Miller). The guaranteed portion of the offer is really $38.5 million, but there is an additional $1.3 million in workout bonuses those first two years. And they’ve said no, because of the guaranteed money – about $35 million in the first two years with the rest to come later.
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Unable to close a deal for linebacker Von Miller before the end of the team’s mandatory minicamp this past week, the Denver Broncos have started to consider some of the other items on their offseason to-do list.
The Broncos and Miller can negotiate until July 15 before the tag tags effect, and Miller shouldn’t take anything less than his fair market value. If he were to do that, the Super Bowl MVP would be risking the potential long-term deal the Broncos offered or at the very least the $14.1 million he’s slated to make this season. Now, it is time to fix the contract mess with Miller. It’s just great to me.
History played a part in this.
As noted by the sports news site, by refusing the contract and purposely missing out on the 2016 season, the Broncos will not be able to put a franchise tag on Miller. But he has not participated in the Broncos’ offseason program and Tuesday’s breakdown in talks signals not enough progress was made.
John Elway has been nothing but sensational for the Denver Broncos since he took over as the Broncos GM back in 2011.
Elway criticized Thomas for skipping offseason workouts previous year, but didn’t do the same with Miller, suggesting in April that it was good for him to get away from football for a while.
But if Miller holds out all season, he can garner some leverage in a situation where he could go three years - his three best years - with none. All while the team was putting in a new offense.
Super Bowl MVP Von Miller’s camp has rejected a contract proposal that would have made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in National Football League history, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Wednesday. Of course if he were to sit out, Denver couldn’t place the franchise tender on him again next offseason.
