The flexible smartphones and foldable tablets are finally here!
But Lenovo may have just one-upped Samsung by showing off two flexible device prototypes at its Lenovo Tech World event. Call if a phone cuff, if you will. The handset Lenovo showcased has a 4.26-inch screen that can also be wrapped around the wrist. The final form factor of the products may change to a degree if and when they ever hit the streets although we have a good idea of how they’ll work after Tech World 2016. Add another player to that list: Lenovo. The smartphone will run Android OS, which was expected, and will come in 12 different colors. It is now not in production, however, meaning there is no news yet of when the two-in-one smartphone will make its way to the shelves.
For now, Lenovo’s new toys are just in the “proof of concept” stage if you will, so there is no guarantee we will actually see them in consumers hands this year or the next.
Lenovo SVP and CTO Peter Hortensius told the audience that the technology not only has a bendable screen, but also bendable hardware components like motherboards and batteries. It’s the company’s way of moving into a hingeless device era, Engadget reports. “Their biggest obstacle was related to making transparent plastics and making them durable, which seems resolved by now”.
So there are rumors that Samsung could be working on a bendable/foldable phone.
With a flexible display and internal hardware, the smartphone can turn into a wearable device by wrapping it around the wrist.
