Rod Laver congratulates Djoker post French Open win
Djokovic’s latest success invites three questions: Just how many grand slams can he win? Djokovic won last year’s Wimbledon and U.S. Open and this year’s Australian Open before winning the French title.
Novak Djokovic came from a set down to beat Andy Murray and win his first French Open title. He has joined the list of legends like Don Budge (1938) and Rod Laver (1962 and 1969), who had clenched Australian Open, US Open, the French Open and the Wimbledon titles.
“It’s incredibly flattering to know that Rod Laver is the last one that managed to do it (the calendar slam). I mean, I’m just so overwhelmed with having this trophy next to me that I’m just trying to enjoy this moment”.
He becomes only the eighth man in history to have won all four of the sport’s major singles prizes – and could yet match Laver’s achievement of winning all four in a calendar year.
He first reached the semi-finals in 2007 and now, nine years and four finals later, finally the Coupe des Mousquetaries is his.
“I needed a little bit of time to really find the right rhythm and to start playing the way I intended, which happened in the beginning of the second and practically until 5-2 in the fourth set”. He’s also in what appears to be his prime, only two weeks past his 29th birthday, demonstrating in Paris that his body-contorting, no-ball-gets-past-me defence, best-in-the-world returns and improved serve are too much for most every opponent to handle.
It “sucked” again when was nearly wiped out 6-0 by Djokovic in the second set – which the Serb would have done if he had converted either of his two break points in the fourth game.
Djokovic is 27-6 combined against Murray (11-2), Federer (6-3), Nadal (7-0) and Wawrinka (3-1) since the start of 2015 and 9-1 at the majors against these fellow members of the Big Five club over the past 18 months.
With 12 majors, Djokovic is only behind Federer (17), Nadal (14) and Pete Sampras (14) in Grand Slams.
Spain’s Garbine Muguruza holds the trophy after winning the final of the French Open tennis tournament against Serena Williams of the U.S.in two sets 7-5, 6-4, at the Roland Garros stadium in Paris, France, June 4, 2016.
The last player to even have the chance of a calendar Grand Slam at this stage of the season was America’s Jim Courier who won the Australian Open and French Open back-to-back in 1992.
Djokovic dropped 14,000 jaws inside Court Philippe Chatrier, a four-set victor over world No. 2 Andy Murray.
Murray said: “To Novak, this is his day”, said Murray. Djokovic now can set his sights on that ultimate tennis achievement, because he is halfway there.
‘Later on I realised that in life everything happens for a reason. But then when you get there, obviously you want to win.
