Reynolds, Familia lead Mets late in 2-1 win over Brewers
The last two games in that streak have come against the Milwaukee Brewers (28-34), including a 2-1 extra inning victory last night.
By the time the dust had settled, it appeared Cabrera was destined to score the winning run once Villar dropped the ball. Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Hernan Perez finished with two each for the Brewers, who have managed just eight total runs in the four meetings with NY this season.
Scooter Gennett, who had a career-high four hits, drove in a run with a double in the eighth to bring the Brewers within two.
Asdrubal Cabrera singled to lead off against Boyer and Wilmer Flores followed with a double.
“All I know is that I hit a line drive to short and I wasn’t out”, Reynolds said. “Something that might happen once every couple years”.
Villar scrambled to retrieve the ball, then tossed to second for the force.
“It’s not as easy as a straight-at-you line drive”. It was topspun pretty hard. Jerry Blevins gets the win in relief, and Jeurys Familia gets the save.
The final outcome allowed Terry Collins to smile and joke after this almost four-hour, mistake-filled game that ranks among the oddest he’s seen in all his years in the majors. “I thought we’d get him back in there”. “Never seen anything like that before. I’m trying to figure out what happened”. It was his 18th start in which he pitched six or more innings allowed one run or fewer and did not earn a win.
Matt Harvey continued his fantastic pitching of late, and now has a 0.90 ERA spanning his past three starts. Guerra had another good start, allowing the one run in 6.2 innings.
Yoanis Cespedes tied the game at one in the top of the sixth with a homer deep into left center off of Junior Guerra.
Guerra almost gave up another one in the seventh, but former Met Kirk Nieuwenhuis made a leaping grab at the wall in straightaway center to rob the newly reacquired Johnson of a potential home run.
“He matched (Harvey), for sure”.
While the Mets were working with a shorthanded bullpen, Verrett was pulled after throwing 87 pitches in four innings. The bottom of the ninth was just as stressful, as the Brewers had runners on second and third with one out, but Jim Henderson managed to get out of it.
Neil Walker is back in the lineup after taking a grounder off his chest on Thursday. “Anything they need me to do – bunt, hit-and-run, get on base”, he said.
Manager Terry Collins said Colon’s veteran leadership is essential to the team’s group of young starters.
Also, Brewers right fielder Domingo Santana is day-to-day with right elbow soreness, missing the last two games. He played in a total of four games after returning from a stay on the 15-day disabled list for a sore right shoulder before again being sidelined.
BILOXI (AA):The Montgomery Biscuits were too hot for Wei-ChungWang to handle as the Shuckers starter allowed eight runs in five innings in a 17-2 pounding administered to the Shuckers.
RHP Wily Peralta (3-7) is 3-2 with a 3.23 ERA in five career starts against the Mets.
