Obama urges LGBT community to keep pushing for equality
At his eighth White House reception celebrating Pride Month, President Obama today thanked the LGBT activists who “have helped to make our union just a little more flawless”. “We have work to make sure that every single child, no matter who they are or where they come from or what they look like or how they live, feels welcomed and valued and loved”.
“And discrimination, it’s so last century”.
The president is believed to be preparing to announce later this month the designation of the first LGBT-themed national monument, by bestowing protected historical status on the Stonewall Inn in New York City, a landmark of the gay-rights movement.
Among those in the audience was James Obergefell, the plaintiff in the Supreme Court decision previous year that guaranteed same-sex couples the right to marry. Obama has endorsed Hillary Clinton to succeed him as president.
“Progress can be reversed”, Obama continued. “We’ve got more work to do”. “Securing the gains this country has made requires perseverance and vigilance, and it requires voting. Boxer at her office this morning and then we had the privilege of riding on the Senate Subway with her as she went to the Capitol Senate Chamber to meet with the other Senators as they headed to a joint session of Congress with the President of India”, Moon wrote on his Facebook page Wednesday.
Obama also revisited the controversial decision to light up the White House in rainbow colors after the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the Constitution gives Americans the legal right to marry someone of the same sex. It was a beacon for people around the world who are still fighting for those rights.
