Cathay Pacific flight makes emergency landing in Alaska’s Aleutians
The flight departed Hong Kong airport at 12.55pm on Wednesday, and touched down in Alaska at about 21.30pm Hong Kong time, Cathay stated in a press release.
An worldwide flight from Hong Kong to Los Angeles was diverted to the Aleutian Islands in Alaska early Wednesday after the crew declared a mid-air emergency.
The Boeing 777-300ER landed safely with 276 passengers and 18 crewmembers.
FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said Flight 884, a Boeing 777, landed without incident before dawn at Eareckson Air Station in Shemya, Alaska.
Remote and often frigid Shemya Island, which is more than 2253 km from Anchorage, is one of the westernmost islands in the Aleutians.
Messages to Eareckson Air Station-under control of the U.S. Air Force-have not been returned as of this morning.
Flight CX884 operated as a codeshare flight with the American Airlines AA8937 and Lan LA6082.
