Jeff Van Gundy reacts to starting frenzy with O.J. Simpson story
Simpson is crouched in the back of the Bronco with a gun to his head, Cowlings is driving and OJ asks him to turn up the radio and slow down so he could hear the end of Knicks-Rockets.
It turns out those two events were tied together in a weird way, and ESPN analyst/then Knicks assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy knows the reason why.
A promo for ESPN’s 30 for 30 documentary concerning Simpson was run during Game 4 of the NBA Finals and Van Gundy made a decision to launch into a randomly brilliant story explaining the reason for Simpson’s slow speed during the chase. Van Guindy was an assistant coach to Pat Riley for the Knicks in 1994. One year, Riley bumped into Cowlings at a vehicle wash.
Lost in the unexpected close game special, however, was Jeff Van Gundy (possibly) dropping one of the biggest revelations of the OJ Simpson case.
Jeff Van Gundy could be in the running for MVP of the NBA Finals. And when Coach Riley told us that story, I was, like, mesmerized by what really goes on.
Reminder: ESPN’s 5-part documentary, O.J.
On Saturday, Van Gundy said he did not plan to retell the story but that he often thinks about what Riley, his former boss, told him whenever he sees footage of the slow speed chase.
Many sports fans likely remember the 1994 NBA Finals for the seven-game thriller between the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks.
