Texas lieutenant governor deletes Bible tweet after shooting
It’s that Texans (including the multiple people that liked the original post) think that this is exactly the kind of Tweet that Patrick would send out in the aftermath of a mass shooting of gay people. The Texas Democratic Party called on Patrick to “apologize immediately”.
Patrick’s posts, which were not pulled down and remained online as of 10:40 a.m., were widely condemned as insensitive.
Patrick’s adviser Allen Blakemore issued a statement saying “the post was designed and scheduled last Thursday”, and was not a response to the events in Orlando.
The posts were pre-scheduled, representatives for the lieutenant governor said; Patrick and other statewide officials usually share Bible verses on social media on Sunday mornings.
Stay on topic – This helps keep the thread focused on the discussion at hand. BibleGateway shows the verse following to declare that those who “sow to please the flesh” will ‘receive destruction.’ With that in mind, it’s hardly surprising that many read Lt. Governor Patrick’s tweet as a declaration that those who were in a gay nightclub had received the destruction promised. He and Jan are praying for the victims, their families and their friends.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina says authorities have not determined an exact number of people killed, but that “approximately 50” have died. “Galatians 6:7”, was pulled from Patrick’s Twitter and Facebook page.
A tweet sent out on the same account an hour later also referenced a Bible verse from Psalm 37:39.
