Orlando shooter scouted Downtown Disney for possible attack
In late 2015, all Disney World and Disneyland theme parks installed metal detectors at their entrances to enhance security.
Representatives for Disney World and Universal Studios Orlando did not immediately respond with comment about the shooting or as to whether security protocols would change following the shooting.
Law enforcement have since identified the shooter as Omar Mateen, 29, a native of St. Port Lucie, Fla.
Had he been able to secure that armor he could have prolonged his attack for even longer as the model he had been hoping to buy is at an “even higher level than what ordinary police departments supply to their officers” according to investigators.
Reports emerged on Monday Mateen considered striking Walt Disney World in Orlando before attacking Pulse instead.
Mateen’s wife, Noor Zahi Salman, told federal authorities that she visited several locations with her husband and that he had been “scouting Downtown Disney and Pulse for attacks”, People says.
But as PEOPLE points out, Downtown Disney, unlike many other Disney World parks, has no bag check upon entry, making it easier to attack.
Sunday morning’s bloodshed hit a gay nightclub during Pride Month, fueling speculation Mateen was motivated by animosity towards the LGBT community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those touched by the unimaginable events that occurred in Orlando early this morning”, Seaworld tweeted Sunday.
In December, Universal said it was also testing the use of metal detectors at the parks, while SeaWorld said guests can expect a “thorough bag check” as well as the use of wand metal detector checks. “But here’s our message to our friends throughout the community – we’re all here for you, no matter where we are”.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, more police would be on hand to keep Universal Studios in Universal City, Calif. secure.
