Buildings on lockdown in downtown Toronto
Although police did not see a firearm in the photo, they said one caller indicated they spotted a man wearing all black and carrying a firearm.
Saunders said several people on campus reported seeing a “suspicious person” dressed in black with a “surgical type” mask and knapsack, the National Post reported.
Numerous buildings have been evacuated and police have closed southbound Queen’s Park while they investigate.
Staff and students have been advised to stay inside as armed police search the campus.
Just after 11 a.m. police took a man into custody but we are still waiting to hear if that was the man they were looking for.
However, he was released later without charges as Toronto Police Chief, Mark Saunders, confirmed that the man was not the main suspect of the investigation.
Roads were cordoned off, and nearby hospitals, including Women’s College Hospital, were also placed in lockdown as a precautionary measure, and Hospital for Sick Children also restricted entry and exit to their buildings “out of caution”.
Dan Clifford, a mover working in the area, said he saw a man walking through the campus near the music building with a full scarf over his face.
University Avenue and Queen’s Park Crescent were also closed between Bloor Street and Hoskin Avenue. Please do not attend this area. Kwong said police don’t know if the caller was seeing officers responding to the incident, or another person.
“There have not been any reports of any injuries at this time”.
