Berger holds his nerve at St Jude Classic
ATZENBRUGG, Austria – China’s Wu Ashun rallied to win the Lyoness Open for his second European Tour victory, improving his chances of playing in the Rio Olympics.
Operating the “picker” led to post-work practice on the driving range, a passion for the game and a fledgling pro career that is on a fast track.
He hit eight of 14 fairways and 16 of 18 greens in regulation.
“I really didn’t pay attention to the scoreboards too much because there’s so much golf left”, Berger said. “The rhythm has been a little bit quick”.
Daniel Berger took home his first PGA Tour title on Sunday over Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson.
Mickelson and Stricker shot 67, while Koepka had a 66.
He stumbled on No. 10, two-putting from 10 feet for bogey. I’m just thrilled right now.
Back in March 2015, Daniel Berger attempted to mount one of the biggest comebacks in PGA TOUR history at the Honda Classic.
No one expects them to be the equal of Hogan, Snead and Nelson, who were all born in the same year, too, but it does bode well for golf for the next couple of decades.
Mickelson, seeking his first victory since the 2013 British Open, equaled his low round of the year with six birdies and one bogey. That proved more than enough margin as Mickelson birdied the par-5 16th.
Berger’s father is the director of men’s tennis for the USTA and was head coach of the 2012 U.S. Olympic team.
In regulation, Henderson saved par on 18 with a 12-footer, moments before Ko missed a 4-foot birdie try on the par-3 17th.
“I’m playing well again and I certainly have to make up some ground this weekend”, he said. I didn’t really know how it finished up, because I didn’t get to see what the last group finished up.
Three years ago, Points had three top-10 finishes.
He’s also seemed unaffected by having to replace his driver and 3-wood, which succumbed to wear and tear last week.
However, it has to be promising for Berger, who didn’t have a good day compared to his earlier rounds, to still be holding the lead with 18 more holes to play.

While it was said in good humor during a tiresome rain delay, Berger took the comment personally. “I love the Bermuda (grass) and I don’t even read grain here”.
“When I had that close call at the Honda 14 events into my PGA TOUR career, you start to think about that a lot”, Berger said in reference to his loss previous year. France’s Gary Stal was a stroke back after a 71. 6 and 7 before adding another two on Nos. On the par-3 fourth, his 57-foot-plus putt stopped inches shy of the cup.
“I’ll be nervous”, Stricker said.
The left-hander, a 42-times victor on the tour, felt his ball-striking still needed improvement.
Berger had six birdies in his bogey-free morning round to reach 9-under 131, and nobody caught him atop the leaderboard.
It wasn’t the finish he was hoping for, but Phil Mickelson couldn’t hide his excitement heading into next week’s U.S. Open.
