Apple unveils watchOS 3 at WWDC 2016 – What’s new?
Meaning, you can tell the Apple Watch which apps you want in your dock and quickly bring up the list by pressing the side button on your watch. This means apps can track your workouts even in the background.
You can then scroll through card previews for the app, and tap on the respective card to launch the app. This is a far better use of using the side button as a shortcut for digital touch.
Just like Messages app on iOS 10, the Messages app in watchOS 3 lets you respond with stickers, handwriting, full screen effects and invisible ink – which reveals the message only after the receiver swipes over the message. Watch apps now launch instantly, rather than taking a few seconds to load. Apple is fixing these issues with a major overhaul to watchOS, coming this fall as a free upgrade for all Apple Watch owners. A new feature, titled Scribble, was touted on stage and allows users to add their own handwritten letters or numbers that will automatically transform into text.
At the conclusion of the call, it will share your location and an emergency message with both the emergency services and with an ICE contact, followed by the users’ medical information. This will work in the USA and internationally. Wheelchair pushes contribute to all-day calorie goals, the “time to stand” reminder is now “time to roll” and there are dedicated wheelchair-specific workouts. There’s also some cool new features that’ll really get your attention, including a new meditation app alongside features for handicapped users…
The Apple watch has had a Mickey Mouse watch face for awhile now, but Lynch announced that Minnie Mouse – complete with changeable outfits – will be joining him when Watch OS3 is released.
After 15 years as OS X, Apple’s Mac operating system is getting a new name.
The other new fitness feature is an entirely new app called Breathe.
More details on the Apple Watch 2 and the next iteration of watchOS are expected at WWDC 2016 in June.
The Apple TV is also seeing some big changes.
Apple said the next-gen OS would ensure apps operated much more quickly and with greater fluidity by running natively through the Watch’s software. For more information, visit apple.com/watchos-preview. “This is an emergency feature that you won’t use often, but when you need it, it’ll be there”, said Jay Blahnik, Apple’s director of fitness and health technologies. Apple is giving those features a huge upgrade in watchOS 3 with a Fitbit-like feature: competition. WatchKit® for watchOS 3 is available immediately for iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com. “Instead, the app now refreshes in the background so it’s available instantly when you want it. That’s about seven times faster, but it feels like a million times faster”.
There’s a new Control Center view, so you can swipe up from the bottom of your watch screen for quick access to settings, just like on your iPhone. Lynch says this system will accelerate the speed of app access by about power of seven and indeed, that estimate seemed pretty accurate when he demonstrated the use of an app called Onefootball.
What’s your take on watchOS 3?
The watchOS 3 feature you may never have to use but might save your life is called SOS. One of the most interesting new features (that caused a collective gasp in the audience) is the Universal Clipboard, which will allow users to copy and paste content from their phone onto their computer. You’ll be able to send messages directly within the Activity app with new pre-written smart replies geared toward encouraging (or smack-talking) your contacts’ activity. You can send them encouragement (or trash talk) and see detailed metrics oin how your performance stacks up. For that, Apple included an app dock similar to the one found on MacOS or iOS.
