Suspect in UCLA shooting remembered as good student in India
His vehicle was spotted in Denver a day before the UCLA killing.
“There is no good reason for this”, Beck said.
The woman killed by Sarkar is thought to be Ashley Hasti.
“During this extremely hard time for our family, we are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support”, Klug’s wife, Mary Elise Klug, said in a statement released through UCLA.
Johnson said the two didn’t get a divorce because Hasti couldn’t afford one. “He was the pride of our school”, said Chowdhury. “As far as I know, he didn’t maintain contact with his schoolmates on social media”, she said.
The official was not authorized to publicly discuss the case and spoke on condition of anonymity.
“I knew him till his ICSE”.
“William Klug, UCLA professor is not the kind of person when you think of a professor”.
Klug says she is grateful for the outpouring of support from UCLA and elsewhere for what she calls an indescribable loss.
The university was shut down for the day but reopened on Thursday and a vigil was planned later in the evening to honor Klug. But that’s something the police chief says they’re investigating. Both Klug and the dead woman were on the list, as well as a second UCLA professor.
Sarkar drove some 3,200 km from Minnesota to Los Angeles, according to Beck, but it was unclear how long he was in the city before Wednesday’s shooting.
Police would not disclose the woman’s name. “She could do anything she dreamed of”, the sister, Alex Hasti said.
According to CBS Minneapolis, they were married in 2011. It’s not clear if they still were married.
Sarkar graduated from UCLA in 2015 with a Ph.D.in mechanical engineering.
Sarkar and Klug were once close. It’s titled, “Coupled Cardiac Electrophysiology and Contraction using Finite Element”.
However Sarkar clearly believed it. The other professor named is safe. Two men were dead in an engineering building office, and authorities found a gun and what might be a suicide note, he said.
Police said, “We believe he went there to kill two faculty of UCLA”, Beck said. It led the police to a small room at the 4th Floor of the Engineering Building where Professor William Klug held office (via CNN). “We just said, ‘Ugh, let’s get him out of here'”.
Police discovered her body shortly after midnight after authorities in California asked them to do a welfare check at the residence.
A Los Angeles police bomb squad member investigates a auto believed to be Mainak Sarkar’s. He killed himself immediately after fatally shooting Klug, he said.
That’s where investigators found the kill list, Beck said.
Sarkar also left a note asking someone to check on his cat in Minnesota, which they did with a search warrant. “Stay away from this sick guy”.
The LA Times printed a blog that Sarkar allegedly wrote on March 10, railing against Klug.
It ends with: “Your enemy is your enemy. Be careful about whom you trust”.
“We believe that Sarkar came to the Los Angeles area very recently, within the last couple of days”, Beck told reporters at Los Angeles police headquarters. Klug had refused to give him a passing grade.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s identified a body found in an apartment in Brooklyn Park as 31-year-old Ashley Erin Hasti.
With a wall’s worth of academic degrees from top universities and a new wife in his chosen country, Mainak Sarkar entered mid-life with a foundation of success. “UCLA says this is absolutely not true”.
What could have been the mental state of a pedigreed doctoral candidate (IIT bachelor’s and Stanford master’s), when he killed his wife in Minnesota and then drove 2500 kms to Los Angeles and shot dead his advisor at UCLA? Witnesses reported hearing three shots, Beck said.
A former classmate at Durgapur’s Bidhan Institute – where Sarkar studied for two years after high school before attending the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur – said he was “totally stupefied” by the news of the shooting.
UCLA officials said they will review all campus safety procedures.
