Apple reveals enhanced artificial intelligence in latest iOS update
The updated platform introduces new features such as Instant Launch, Dock, Scribble and new watchfaces, to name a few. The update will be released this fall.
There’s a new Sign in mode on tvOS that’s plannedto prevent having to resign into various channels or video on demand. The product was launched previous year, and now boasts 6,000 apps on its operating system (OS). The desktop operating system is no longer the black sheep of the Apple family, and can now hang out with iOS, watchOS and tvOS without fear of being singled out as an embarrassing anomaly.
OS X is no more.
iOS 10 is available now as a public beta, and will be released officially in September, most likely at the same time as the long-rumoured iPhone 7.
Federighi is back on stage to enumerate what makes iOS 10 better. If they remove the Stocks app, for example, they won’t be able to see stock information from it in the notification center of their phones. The lock screen supports now pick-up to wake and a swipe to the left activates the camera.
Apple’s photo app will also get smarter. This means Apple device users will be able to call an Uber or send a message through WeChat just by asking Siri. The centerpiece is its new Home app, which puts the controls for all of a user’s HomeKit devices in one place.
Apple acknowledged a number of developers’ grievances this month by allowing ads in App Store search results, which gives them a way to stand out in a sea of apps. While Apple is opening its text messaging service to outside app-builders, for instance, Apple made no mention of adding the kind of intelligent programs, or “chatbots”, that competitors are all rushing to build into their messaging platforms.
Much of the new functionality in Photos will be familiar to anyone who’s used Google Photos.
Some of the most important highlights include Siri’s ability to work with third-party apps, the new features coming to iMessage (which include interacting with apps through Messages and tapping a word to replace it with an emoji), and an upgrade to the Photos app that uses artificial intelligence to recognize people, places, and things. The Home app is also available in the Apple Watch. It also prevents you from adding features an iMessage app won’t need.
As for its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Apple says it uses on-device intelligence, banking on “differential privacy” which is described as “crowd-sourced learning while keeping data from different users private”.
WWDC 2016 has been and gone in slightly underwhelming fashion, with Tim Cook and co showing off Apple’s latest software to the world before it becomes available to consumers later this year. CHeck in with us tomorrow morning for all the analyses on the updates.
The WWDC has in the past served as a platform for launching new hardware and there’s every possibility a new MacBook Pro laptop could be making its debut this year and that we could catch a glimpse of a 5K monitor and even a refreshed Mac Pro.
Maps in iOS 10 also gets a redesign that should make it easier to get from A to B.
