Democrats searching for unity as Clinton locks up nomination
President Barack Obama’s endorsement of Clinton headlined a day of unity for Democrats Thursday as the party prepares for Republican Donald Trump.
Obama defeated Clinton in the 2008 Democratic primary and she went on to serve as secretary of state in his first term.
There is one party member who might sway Sanders supporters: Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren.
The ad splices clips of Donald Trump threatening protesters and mocking a disabled reporter with scenes of Clinton visiting factories, greeting diverse groups of voters and stepping off a plane as secretary of state.
And Trump is already using Warren’s past comments to remind his Twitter followers that Warren was not always on Team Clinton.
“Delete your account.” Hillary Clinton’s snarky tweet Thursday to her White House rival Donald Trump was among the funniest of the campaign. Mr Sanders also seeks to shape Democratic primary and convention rules and its policy agendas, and maximise his influence in the party.
“I don’t think there’s ever been someone so qualified to hold this office”, Obama said.
The Vermont senator was at the White House for discussions on how to heal rifts in the Democratic party after a testy primary campaign, and head united into the looming showdown with the presumptive Republican nominee. “I am going to vote for Bernie Sanders at the convention”.
His focus on Trump was particularly noteworthy, especially since he refrained from making the case-the one he and his allies have been making for months-that he is better positioned than Clinton to defeat the presumptive GOP nominee in the general election.
“Our job is not to allow politicians, Mr. Trump or anyone else, to divide us up by where our family came from, the color of our skin, our religion or our sexual orientation”, Sanders said. And the president himself has said he thought part of his job was to remind the American people that being president and commander in chief is a serious responsibility.
“I know there’s been a lot of speculation about this, but the truth is I love the work I do” in the Senate, Warren said.
“Hillary will bring hundreds of thousands of refugees, many of whom have hostile beliefs about people of different faiths and values and some of whom absolutely and openly support terrorism in our country”, he claimed. Democrats are lucky because they have a wide variety of potential running mates who would be great vice presidents, but there is something unique about Sen.
