Djokovic wins maiden French open to complete career Grand Slam
Novak Djokovic came from a set down to beat Andy Murray and win his first French Open title.
It “sucked” again when was nearly wiped out 6-0 by Djokovic in the second set – which the Serb would have done if he had converted either of his two break points in the fourth game. “It’s very flattering, I respect tennis history a lot and you need to as a tennis player, or any other athlete for that matter”. Fight the last three, four exchanges, going left to right and hoping that Andy will make a mistake, which has happened.
“A thrilling moment, one of the most handsome I have had in my career”. “Obviously, one had to lose but I am sure we will be seeing you with the big trophies in the future”.
For more than a decade, he tried to win the French Open, the lone Grand Slam title missing from his collection, coming close but never quite sealing the deal.
Last year Djokovic appeared set to win after finally beating Rafael Nadal only for Stan Wawrinka to play the match of his life and deny him.
In the third set, Murray checked the onslaught by holding in the first game but at 1-1, some poor volleying from Murray enabled Djokovic to reach breakpoint and he broke serve on another simple volley error from Murray.
Winning the four majors – Wimbledon, U.S. Open, Australian Open and the French Open – in a row is a feat that is so hard that it had not been achieved by a man since Rod Laver won the second of his calendar Grand Slams in 1969. You know, I didn’t do that today.
Victory also allowed Djokovic to stretch his winning record over 29-year-old Murray to 24-10 overall and 8-2 in the major tournaments.
“It’s really a very special moment”, Djokovic said.
Since his defeat in the 2015 Paris final, he has been undefeated in 28 consecutive Grand Slam appearances since Wimbledon a year ago.
The Scot would get a break and close to 5-4 – but Djoker moves to within a point of a Roland Garros title as he smashes the victor into the open court.
As Murray was serving for the set, he was awarded a point to lead 30-0, Djokovic having hit his return before an “out” call on the serve was made.
Laver hailed Djokovic’s game earlier this year. But on the third, Murray netted a backhand and it was all over.
The American won the 1937 Wimbledon and United States and then his Grand Slam of all four in the calendar year of 1938. Djokovic celebrates with the trophy after winning. Once tennis fans realize the opportunity to watch Djokovic play is to literally observe history, perhaps they’ll come around. Djokovic could become the first man since Laver to win a single-season Grand Slam if he defends his titles at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open later this year.
“We’re all humans, and arriving so close like never before in my life to this trophy and winning it, you know, I felt it”.
With victories in Australia and France already under his belt in 2016, he now heads to Wimbledon and then NY for the US Open in an attempt to complete the clean sweep.
