Family swept over NY falls was in unauthorized area
On Sunday, New York State Park Police Major David Page said that the seven people “were in a restricted area at the time of the incident”.
The body of one of two children swept away by a waterfall in upstate NY over the weekend has been recovered, authorities have announced.
State police say an underwater recovery team found Dylan Giangregorio’s body Tuesday.
The Lower Falls at Letchworth State Park in Castile, N.Y., is where seven members of a family went over Saturday. They were hospitalized with various injuries, from minor to serious. Resources from multiple agencies continue looking for the boy who is presumed drowned.
Although the park – about 45 minutes south of Rochester – is filled with hiking trails, swimming in the river is prohibited. After one person slipped, one family member after another ended up in the water, causing everyone to be carried over the falls, the paper reported.
According to the State Police, Dylan Giangregorio was located and recovered from the Genesee River below the falls late in the afternoon.
Areas near the falls were closed Sunday afternoon because of the ongoing operation. Five people, two adults and three children, were rescued and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital on Saturday. The body of one of the two boys has been recovered, but the search is still continuing for the body of the second boy.
