The Tampa rally is Trump’s second since the end of the primary season.
Asked Thursday if he was open to the convention picking a different candidate than Trump, Cruz said, “I’m going to leave political punditry to the people who get paid to do it”.
On the issues of religious freedom, though, Trump promised to “respect and defend Christian Americans”. Saying it doesn’t define us.

In interviews and speeches since clinching the Republican nomination, Trump has said he wanted to spice up his party’s nominating convention – historically a formal, week-long celebration consisting of speeches from party members all over the country, culminating with a speech from the party’s presidential nominee. The group’s president, Cecile Richards, introduced her as “our friend”.
Planned Parenthood has faced controversy because it provides abortion services in some of its clinics.
Trump is likely to face off with Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, in the general election.
Clinton praised the organization’s work on providing birth control and breast-cancer screenings.
“It’s becoming increasingly clear that Donald Trump’s career was about scamming Americans and his campaign is about dividing them”, said Valentina Pereda, Clinton’s Florida spokeswoman.
Clinton leads Trump by three points, which is within the poll’s margin of error.
Clinton attacked Trump, saying he would appoint Supreme Court judges who would overturn Roe v. Wade, and reminded the audience of comments Trump made – and later walked back – that, if he succeeded in criminalizing abortions, women who sought them should be punished.
Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said talk of ditching Trump at the convention was a “Washington fantasy” that would look like the party was “trying to undo the will of the Republican electorate” and pull off “some sort of coup”.
