Dolphins’ Jones reports after missing 1st day of minicamp
Safety Reshad Jones reported to Dolphins minicamp on Wednesday, ending an absence from the team that began when the team started their offseason practices and extended through Tuesday’s start of the mandatory camp.
Jones also missed the Dolphins’ organized team activities, which were voluntary. He could be fined about $25,000 for the minicamp session he skipped.
Reshad Jones led the Dolphins in tackles and interceptions last season and now wants a new contract. He led all National Football League safeties in tackles (135) last season to go along with five interceptions and two sacks.
“That was one thing that I was told from the get-go – whenever he showed up, don’t worry about it”, Gase said. As far as I saw, the way he was moving around, he looked really good.
“We’re going to have to figure that out”, Adam Gase said of the Dolphins’ vision for Jones.
Jones, had a spectacular 2015 campaign and put up impressive numbers that Miami can not refuse to pay him what he wants…he IS that good of a player.
“Everything’s behind me. I’m ready to play football, ” Jones said.
And while the months-long holdout didn’t accomplish what Jones wanted – a fresh contract with big guaranteed dollars – Jones is optimistic that a new deal is still in the cards.
Gase is pleased to have Jones back, who was the team’s co-MVP a year ago.
“I think whenever a player is out there, we get excited, whether they’ve been injured or hasn’t been here”. He jumped right in there. Salguero adds that the Dolphins and Jones are negotiating, and that there is a chance Miami could work out a new deal with their starting safety, despite most teams shying away from entering into negotiations with a player prior to the final year of a contract.
Its uncertain whether Jones might sit out the start of training camp next month. I mean we’re in day one with him.
I kind of screwed that up, the coach said. Were going to concentrate on what guys we have here..
“We missed our boy”, said center Mike Pouncey. Obviously, our best player on defense, a great football player. We have a general idea of how we want to use him.
