Detroit Tigers plan to sell at trade deadline amid disappointing season
“I check with our guys to see how they’re doing and if they feel they’re dragging or I feel they’re dragging, then we pay attention, but there’s been no signs by the way he’s swinging the bat or moving around the field that he needs a day, so, I haven’t given him one yet”. He’ll be a free agent after this season.
The Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees are among the teams that were hoping Price would become available.
“He [Price] gives them stability at the top of the rotation”, he said.
The asking price for Tigers pitcher David Price is going to be pretty pricey.
Dave Dombrowski confirmed the club has informed other teams that they are willing to listen to offers.
It was only a year ago that Oakland bolstered by landing Jon Lester just before the deadline and the Tigers countered by adding Price.
Counting on prospects is a unsafe game, but Tigers fans will buckle up and enjoy the craziness heading toward Friday at 4 p.m. They’d better, because they probably won’t enjoy the final two months of the season if Price, Cespedes and perhaps Soria are gone.
A source said that GM Brian Cashman has “no intention” of dealing any of the Yankees’ top four prospects – Luis Severino, Aaron Judge, Greg Bird or Jorge Mateo – but a package led by Ivan Nova and Gary Sanchez could be enough to deal for Price. Without one of those pieces, getting Price would move from hard to potentially impossible.
Tampa Bay dealt Price to the Tigers at the trade deadline last season and the Yankees were among the teams also trying for the lefthander, who in the past has expressed an admiration for the Bombers as a franchise. Or the Astros could do something similar with Collin McHugh and prospects. Still, others, including this writer, believe the team should sell at the deadline despite how unlikely this is. Cespedes is also a welcome addition to the market for teams that are in need of a power bat and are scared of Justin Upton’s diminished offensive output.
Soria is in the midst of a rough season for the Tigers, despite a solid 2.85 ERA and 23 saves compared to just three blown saves. The Tigers are now placed fourth in the American League Central; the organization is 13.5 games behind the Kansas City Royals.
This is a chance for Detroit to hit the reset button and gain some financial flexibility, farm depth and try to re-tool to make another run in 2016.
