Lawmaker To Give Away AR-15s
“It doesn’t have anything to do with the weapon, it has everything to do with the person who’s behind that weapon pulling the trigger”, Rep. Holt said in a phone call with WTVF.
According to NBC affiliate WSMV-Nashville, Republican representative Andy Holt is not known for biting his tongue, even in the hours following the deadliest shooting in US history. Excerpts were posted on Holt’s blog.
Holt closed his Facebook posting with: “Dear media, You want to know if I’m still giving away an AR-15?”
A West Tennessee lawmaker is giving away not one – but two – military-style rifles in the wake of this weekend’s shooting at a nightclub in Orlando.
The worst mass shooting in modern USA history has a renewed an ongoing debate surrounding gun control laws. “It’s not about the gun”, he says.
One of the firearms Omar Mateen used during his rampage through the Pulse nightclub was a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle. “I’ll do everything I can to ensure the 2nd Amendment is protected and people are equipped to exercise their innate right to self-defense”.
Mr Holt has reacted against the reports about his giveaway: “The Orlando terrorist didn’t use an AR-1”.
Holt argued that gun-free zones should not exist in any public spaces in Tennessee, while standing behind his plan to introduce a bill next year that will allow students to carry guns on college campuses. “It has everything to do with who’s behind the weapon”.
While announcing his plans last week to hold his first annual “Hog Fest and Turkey Shoot”, Holt, R-Dresden, said he will give away an AR-15 as a door prize to an attendee of his June 25 fundraiser. Responsible gun owners make sure that guns are safely and securely stored to prevent access by children or irresponsible adults. “Responsible gun owners don’t put guns in the hands of strangers”, Mancini wrote. She also called Holt “reckless and irresponsible” for raffling off guns without putting the winners through a background check.
In the online announcement, Holt also cracked a joke about the transgender community.
Holt told reporters his office had received multiple threatening phone calls over his decision to go forward with the planned giveaway. “These liberal activists are threatening to bring their guns to the Capitol and harm people…it makes zero sense, but it’s what we’ve come to expect”.
“It’s not meant to come across as offensive”, said Holt.
“Oh I got plenty”, the caller responded.
Six months ago, in San Bernardino, Calif., a man and woman armed with assault-style rifles killed 14 people and wounded 20 others at a holiday party. The focus should not be on the weapon, it should be on the individual’s heart and the cowardly acts that he performed. Wait.He says he’s received death threats from “the left wing” and he’s “sick and exhausted of the media and liberal politicians attacking our right to keep and bear arms”, which is why now he’s urging everyone who doesn’t have a gun to go out and get one, and if they have one, to get another, because, yeah, GUNS!
