The Cardinals later confirmed it was a strained right quad, which is the same injury he had been dealing with earlier this season, noted Derrick Goold of the St. Walden threw 15 pitches, gave up a hit and a walk and struck out one in a scoreless outing. Holliday just returned from a quad injury after the All-Star break, though the Cardinals have not yet disclosed the nature of this setback. Holmberg’s presence means four of the five starters in the rotation are rookies.
