Wallabies need to work on discipline, says Fardy
England coach Eddie Jones says the Wallabies will rebound in the second Test in Melbourne.
Jones reacted angrily to what he called a “disgusting” promotional video aired by Fox Sports before the first Test in Brisbane and took exception to post-match questions posed by the former global Stephen Hoiles, who is employed on a rugby show on the same network. We want to play legally, we want to scrum straight, we want to scrum square and we want to scrum at them.
Can Rooney down Wales?
Phipps started in the Wallabies’ record 33-13 victory at Twickenham in October and the 39-28 defeat in Brisbane on Saturday, a result that has left the hosts trailing 1-0 in the three-Test series.
This time though England have Jones in their corner and he is not about to stand idly by and allow his countrymen to destabilise his team when they are so close to a historic series win.
‘Phil is part of an organised campaign, he is playing his role and playing it well. I have been part of it, I know how it works.
‘It’s an area we want to dominate. “We want to improve the side every week, that’s all we’re trying to do”. “I was an observer for the Lions series so I witnessed what happened in the first game”.
During the session, George Ford and Owen Farrell were operating in tandem as the 10-12 double act, raising the prospect of the pair being reunited from the start on Saturday.
But rather than leave it at that the home guard of ex-players went back on the offensive – requiring Jones to go from defending his own honour to that of his team.
“We are lucky we have got a fantastic referee for the second Test. Craig Joubert has refereed at least one World Cup final and is one of the most respected referees in the world”. Eddie Jones’ mock-conspiracy might just be his best handling of the press yet. “That’s what got England the game; six penalties they kicked – when you score four tries to two before the 79th minute and you’re still behind, it’s a disappointing thing”. That’s how we teach them how to scrum. “We have to make sure we don’t let the standards in training slip”.
The Wallabies may also look at making some tactical player changes for the clash in Melbourne after coach Michael Cheika gambled on a massive centre pairing of Samu Kerevi and Tevita Kuridrani for the clash at Lang Park.
“When you consider the history of the English team in Australia, there is reason for desperation and it is good desperation”.
“All we’re focused on is this game this week against probably a more determined Australian team after that first game”.
