Trump’s new Obama claims thrust him into uncharted territory
Trump’s penchant for outrageous statements has also been highly effective at allowing him to dominate the airwaves and the internet, attracting a vastly disproportionate quantity of coverage.
In a speech a few hours later, he reiterated his call for a temporary ban on Muslims coming to the US and said that as president he would “suspend immigration from areas of the world where there’s a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe and our allies”.
Here’s why the DNC won’t call Clinton the presumptive Democratic nominee, NBC News’ Alex Seitz-Wald reports. Has he taken leave of his senses?
While the president has frequently dismissed Trump as a buffoon or a huckster, this time he challenged the former reality television star as a “dangerous” threat to the nation’s safety, religious freedom and diversity. “Would it make ISIL less committed to trying to kill Americans?” Trump has said that he doesn’t have to bother with things like having a data-driven voter contact plan, because he can just use free media to get his message to voters. Clinton asked the crowd rhetorically. Turns out it’s not happening.
In an attempt to defend his controversial claims that the president supports the terrorist group, the presumptive Republican nominee tweeted a story from anti-Obama website Breitbart.com that cites a newly discovered “secret” memo the website says proves Obama is an ISIS supporter.
Barack Obama pulled no punches as he launched a blistering attack on Donald Trump for the billionaire’s proposed ban on Muslims entering the US. But he did neither.
Republican Senator Jeff Sessions, a Trump foreign policy adviser, justified the candidate’s pronouncement, saying “it is perfectly appropriate for the country to refuse admission to those whose presence may be detrimental to the national interest”. Just please be quiet, don’t talk…we have to have our Republicans either stick together or let me just do it by myself. Because that’s not the America we want – it doesn’t reflect our democratic ideals. This is a different kind of year.
The Republican pledged to protect all Americans “wherever they come from, wherever they were born”, but he repeatedly referred to Muslims in a negative context. But because Democrats significantly outnumbered Republicans among those who went to the polls, Obama won relatively easily.
Another poll out today from ABC News/Washington Post shows Trump with his worst negative rating since announcing his candidacy, with 70 percent of Americans saying they view him negatively – by far the worst result in history for any major party nominee. Said Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, “What Trump does or says, every time he says something doesn’t mean I have to have an answer for it”.
She said if elected in the November general elections her top priority would be to identify and stop attacks by lone wolves, like the one on Orlando over the weekend resulting in deaths of 49 people.
All this comes literally less than a week after Trump spoke before hundreds of well-connected politically active evangelical Christians, promising them he will restore faith to where it belongs, he supports so-called traditional marriage, (“so important,”) and so on.
