16-year-old girl killed in shooting in Oakland, California
Police in Oakland, California, say a 16-year-old girl has died after being shot in the city’s downtown area, where another three people were wounded.
The shooting comes after an attack early Sunday at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, left 49 people dead.
The teens, identified by the Stanislaus County coroner’s office as Josiah Pratt-Rose and Jamari Wilson, had gone missing after jumping from a boat with family members.
Witnesses said the 16-year-old girl who died had been shot in the neck.
The shooting was reported at 9:55 p.m. Monday in the 2900 block of High Street. Police spoksman Kyle Hazen said a vehicle was seen fleeing the area of the shooting.
“And then basically there were people running every which way”, said Mason Stone, 39, told SFGate.
Dozens of people gathered at the venue after attending a funeral for two teenagers who drowned over Memorial Day weekend, according to the report.
Across the USA there were 43 shootings on Sunday, with 18 more deaths and at least five children among the victims, Gun Violence Archive and Vox media outlet reported.
While it’s unknown whether the shooting was related to the vigil, another witness said the vigil attendees were caught in a crossfire.
“This is very unusual, ” Oscar Edwards told the Chronicle. “Downtown Oakland has changed a lot. This was an isolated incident”. The scene on the street below was chaotic and loud, she said.
