Sanders says he will work with Clinton to transform party
The donations, which were almost double those accepted by Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, came even as the former senator and secretary of state vowed to curb price gouging in the industry if elected. “And I personally intend to begin my role in that process in a very short period of time”, Sanders said.
But the cryptic language may also reflect ongoing negotiations between the two campaigns over which of several demands made by Sanders at a meeting on Tuesday the Clinton team would be willing to accept.
“After centuries of racism, sexism and discrimination of all forms in our country we do not need a major party candidate who makes bigotry the cornerstone of his campaign”, he said.
He accused Trump of insulting Hispanics, Muslims, women and African-Americans, and of calling global warming a hoax.
“I also look forward to working with Secretary Clinton to transform the Democratic Party so that it becomes a party of working people and young people, and not just wealthy campaign contributors”, he said in a speech broadcast from his hometown of Burlington, Vermont.
Then he made it clear that, while he wouldn’t be conceding just yet, he would be working with Clinton to enact a progressive party platform and defeat Donald Trump in the general election. “It is also true that our views are quite close on others”, Sanders said.
The Sanders campaign said the speech was streamed to at least 218,000 people.
Earlier today, Sanders’ campaign manger Jeff Weaver confirmed during an interview with Bloomberg News that Sanders’ campaign was not actively lobbying super delegates to vote for Sanders, nor do they plan to start soon. But something Sanders has done throughout his campaign and very pointedly did here is straightforwardly challenge the good faith of the vast majority of his colleagues in Democratic Party politics.
We may not win in every state tomorrow but we will never win unless we recruit good candidates and develop organizations that can compete effectively in the future. “We must provide resources to those states which have so always been ignored”.
Last week she clinched the number of delegates needed to become the party flagbearer next month at its national convention, and she shifted weeks ago to her likely showdown against Trump.
One die-hard supporter of Mr. Sanders summed up his feelings for the candidate by invoking the Batman movie “The Dark Knight”: “The president we needed but didn’t deserve”.
Since 2011, however, and under the stewardship of Sanders’ nemesis, DNC Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., the party has focused more on securing swing states.
Sanders will nearly certainly remain a powerful force on the progressive wing of the party but is now likely to call on his supporters to throw their weight behind Clinton in the face of a historic threat from Trump. He said that instead they should considering running for office.
