Tony Awards 2016: “Hamilton” wins 11 awards but doesn’t break record
“Tonight our joy is tinged with sorrow but we’re here to celebrate Broadway and the beauty that artistry can bring into this world”.
“Love is love, is love, is love, is love, is love, is love, is love and can not be killed or swept aside”, Lin-Manuel Miranda said during an emotional sonnet read during his acceptance for Best Score of a Musical.
And Miranda posted a photo to Twitter in celebration.
The hip-hop musical tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers and an influential figure in the drafting of the United States constitution. The fourth, for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical”, went to The Color Purple’s Cynthia Erivo. Just moments earlier, she had received a standing ovation for her performance of the show’s song “I’m Here”.
This was up 35% from last year’s 6.46 million viewers and was the awards show’s biggest audience since 2001. “Keep the faith”, he said.
Meanwhile, acclaimed show “The Humans” scored the most trophies in the play categories, for best play, best featured actor and actress prizes for its two stars Reed Birney and Jayne Houdyshell, respectively, and best scenic design of a play for David Zinn.
Not all shows had reason to smile. I… will not be all about how Hudson… there will also be some commotion writes… the as expected… New York Times theater reporter tweeted early Sunday the cast had chose to omit the muskets from the stage in light of the Orlando tragedy.
Those who attended the ceremony wore silver ribbons to show solidarity with the victims and their families.
So he reached out, giving honor to the lives lost and reminding us all that like the love he has for his wife and child, love will once again conquer this hate. He nearly teared up when he mentioned his brother’s struggle with the condition. He also had a message for the people of Orlando: “We will be with you every step of the way”.
Ivo Van Hove won the award for Best Director of a Play, for “A View From the Bridge“. That’s one shy of the record set by Mel Brooks’ “The Producers“. He later flirted with Oprah Winfrey. After the applause, he continued, “It is so diverse, Donald Trump has threatened to build a wall around this theater”. Onstage before the “On Your Feet” medley began, Emilio Estefan joked that all the Latino cast of the musical was in the country legally, in a jab at Trump.
Want more stuff like this? Glenn Close played presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in a Chorus Line parody titled “A Clinton Line”. Gloria Estefan’s musical On Your Feet! will also feature.
“Hamilton” reigned yesterday (June 12th 2016) at the annual Tony Awards which aired on CBS.
