Landry three ahead at weather-hit US Open
After surviving a day in this glorified tent that covers an area about half the size of a football field, I feel like I’ve survived the worst Oakmont can throw at me.
McIlroy hit a splendid recovery shot from the rough, but he did what Ford said not to do: He left it above the hole. It was his only stroke of the day so far. The span of time stretches all the way back to 1927 when Tommy Armour won the first one played here. He still held the lead at 3 under, though, teeing off on his final hole of the day. “My game plan isn’t going to change too much”.
On his tail are Bubba Watson and Danny Lee, both at 2-under, and several players – Lee Westwood, Harry English, Kevin Streelman and Scottie Scheffler – at 1-under par.
Landry may or may not have the staying power to lead going into the final few rounds; the U.S. Open has a way of exposing such things. The 28-year-old qualifier only had to hit one shot Friday when he returned in the morning to make a 10-foot birdie putt for a 66.
At least those golfers struggling to find a rhythm got a break after the second delay. Not that he was complaining as playing partners Matthew Baldwin and D.J. Trahan took their time while trying to salvage the final hole of a hard round.
USGA officials say they are still on track for a Sunday finish – barring a playoff, of course – with the forecast showing sunny and hot with no rain.
Located minutes from Charlottesville, Spring Creek is a meticulously-planned, amenity-filled, 24-hour gated residential community with single family homes, townhomes, and villa homes priced from the mid $200s.
The last time the US Open was here in 2007, there were 60 scores of 80 or higher over the four days.
“Right now I need to focus on hitting fairways and greens”.
“He played awesome”, Garcia said. “I know it’s going to be tough and you are going to miss greens and make bogeys so maybe when I am like that I can accept bogeys a little easier”.
Unheralded American Andrew Landry created history in the weather-delayed US Open as Lee Westwood found himself in contention for a long-overdue first major title at Oakmont.
Jordan Spieth, meanwhile, could use the delay to cool down. He finished one shot behind Angel Cabrera, and to this day, Furyk doesn’t regret his decision.
Lowry has yet to capitalise on a number of good opening rounds this season but added: ” Weeks like this I tend to get my head around it. “How is that in the bunker!” he yelled.
This very hole at Oakmont, which checked in at 667 yards for the 2007 U.S. Open. And it’s the U.S. Open. It was his fourth birdie of the round against no bogeys, and Landry at 4 under had opened a two-shot lead. Before Thursday, the most notable day of his career came in his victory in a Web.com Tour event in Colombia a year ago, a continent away from his hometown in Groves, Texas.
Last time at Oakmont, Jim Furyk tried to drive the green and wound up making bogey. That helps explain why he is No. 624 in the world ranking. It seemed that as soon as the sky cleared over Oakmont, another front rolled in and the greens quickly started to resemble ponds.
It took almost 35 hours to complete the first round of the 2016 U.S. Open, but when the final scorecard was signed, the result was a lot of red numbers.
