England made history but it’s not good enough, says Jones
Jones said the England side had a full list to pick from for the second Test, despite a small group of players missing training on Monday as a precaution.
Wallabies: The magic of Eddie Jones knows no boundary, this time leading England to an upset victory over Australia in the first test.
Fortunately for Australia they have great depth at openside flanker, with Sean McMahon having a good game off the bench on Saturday and Liam Gill offering a top quality option as back-up.
Australia opened the three-Test series with a 39-28 loss to England, who outmuscled and out-thought the home side to claim their first ever Test win at Suncorp Stadium. It is quite demeaning and disrespectful to the team, so we’re not going to let this opportunity pass’.
Jones, however, suspects the World Cup finalists might be playing mind games after casting doubt on the severity of the injury. You know when you’re in Australia because you get a lot of banter.
“If it was “try or no try”, different story, but when he says “is there any reason why I can’t award the try” it has to be clear”.
“I’m old enough now not to worry about referee’s decisions”, he said. Don’t worry about that.
The Australian, 56, added: “I don’t talk about it to the team”.
“David Campese has got to be somewhere”. He is coming for sure.
“But anyway, that happens, you have to go with the punches”.
“We’ve come here to win the series, next week is super important and we’re focused on that already”. That’s the only thing. “This is about us, not about Australia”. “They’ve come back as a second-placed team in the world, they’ve got the world’s best coach, the expectation is high for them and the pressure’s on them next week”. “There has been a row of ex-Wallaby players – you’ve had Hoiles, you’ve had (Simon) Poidevin, and you have had (Phil) Kearns”.
The most recent meeting between the rivals was at last autumn’s World Cup when Australia left Twickenham with a record 33-13 victory that knocked England out of the tournament they were hosting.
“We can’t afford to get too excited”, said the former Wallabies mentor.
Jones reacted angrily to what he called a “disgusting” promotional video aired by Fox Sports before the first Test in Brisbane and took exception to post-match questions posed by the former global Stephen Hoiles, who is employed on a rugby show on the same network.
England had conceded two tries nearly before they touched the ball – and ended the game on the wrong end of the try count.
“I think we showed real grit”, Jones told Sky Sports. We have a young squad with an average age of 24 so we are still developing and improving. “Are we not allowed to enjoy a win mate?”.
