With careful staging, Obama backs Clinton, nudges Sanders
On the heels of President Obama’s endorsement of Hillary Clinton, beloved progressive Democrat Senator Elizabeth Warren finally announced that she’s with her, telling Rachel Maddow last night, “I’m ready to get in this fight and work my heart out for Hillary Clinton to become the next president of the United States and to make sure that Donald Trump never gets any place close to the White House”.
Obama has competition in courting Sanders supporters. I know some say these primaries have somehow left the Democratic Party more divided.
Sanders campaign spokesman Michael Briggs said the men discussed “how we can all work together to create an economy that works for all people and not just the 1 percent”.
“As Americans look to choose Obama’s successor and decide whether they generally want to continue with the policy course he has set or change the nation’s direction, the public will naturally reflect on how he has done as president”, Gallup’s Jeffrey M. Jones wrote in April. Sanders came prepared with his statement.
The careful choreography was part of the Democrats’ attempt to show some respect to Sanders, even as they steered the long-time senator toward the campaign off-ramp.
The endorsement is the clearest sign yet the Democrats are coalescing around Clinton, who was declared the party’s presumptive nominee earlier this week, despite another pledge by Sanders Thursday that he will keep trying to get the party’s nomination. These self-described PUMAs-an acronym that stood for “Party Unity My Ass”-made up by some measures more than one-third of Clinton supporters”. Jeff Merkley of OR, the one Senate Democrat to endorse Sanders, said Clinton was the nominee and offered his congratulations.
U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders takes his seat to meet with U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) in Reid’s offices at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S. June 9, 2016.
Ojha’s move to Team Clinton comes three days after the former secretary of state clinched the Democratic nomination, and a day after major Democratic officials came out to back her bid, including Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Sen.
“Donald Trump can’t be president”.
The two took to Trump’s preferred medium to tangle Thursday. “He wants four more years of Obama – but nobody else does!”
On Tuesday, he responded to Obama’s endorsement by tweeting: “Obama just endorsed Crooked Hillary”.
The Post also noted that the challenge for Clinton might be more hard than it was for Obama, because her favorability numbers are much lower than his were and because of the grassroots nature of Sanders’ campaign.
