France confirm top spot in Group A despite being frustrated by Switzerland
Switzerland and tournament hosts France are through to the round-of-16 as they played out a 0-0 draw in their last match in Group A.
With the draw, France finished top of Group A with seven points while Switzerland are second with five points.
Following France’s no score, but far from boring, final group game against Switzerland, Paul Pogba, the highly regarded Juventus midfielder spoke as his team topped Group A.
The visitor came close to taking an early lead when Fabian Schar’s header struck Pogba and deflected towards goal until it was inadvertently blocked by his central-defensive partner Johan Djourou on the line.
Paul Pogba could have made the difference for the Les Blues, but goalkeeper Yann Sommer denied the Juventus midfielder all his attempts to get a goal.
It could not be more different for Romania coach Angel Iordanescu, whose 100th game on their bench as coach or assistant coach marked a quick end to their Euro hopes with yet another performance lacking guile and creativity.
Atletico Madrid forward Griezmann’s shot was parried over soon after following a neat one-two with Gignac with Switzerland struggling to offer any attacking threat of their own.
In-form Payet, a former Lille player, had been brought on with 27 minutes left as France chased the opener and the West Ham man nearly grabbed it.
Moussa Sissoko produced a turbo-charged run down the right and Payet met his ideal cross on the volley but his effort crashed back off the bar.
The 29-year-old then sliced wide with time running out and his late free-kick hit team-mate Blaise Matuidi in the wall.
